Mountaintop Detonation, Giant Magellan Telescope (Video courtesy US State Department)

On March 23, 2012, the Las Campanas Peak in Chile had its first detonation to begin site preparation for the construction of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)-- one of the next class of super-giant Earth-based telescopes that promises to revolutionize our view and understanding of the universe. It will be operational in about 10 years.
